Why drink less?

Government guidelines recommend we should drink no more than 14 units a week, but why? Alcohol can affect our overall health in all sorts of ways and there are many benefits to drinking less. Let’s take a look at a few.

To start, it’s a good idea to get familiar with what 14 units looks like in drinks. It’ll help you to know your limits.

Here are some example of 14 units of alcohol:

  • 6 pints of 4% strength beer.
  • 6 175ml glasses of 13% strength wine.
  • 14 25ml glasses of spirits.

Drinking too much increases your chances of alcohol related harm, in the short and long term. What’s more, if you have a healthy relationship with alcohol here’s just some of the benefits you’ll see:

  • Better sleep – not getting enough sleep can make you stressed and irritable. When we don’t sleep well we often feel grumpy and find it hard to muster up enthusiasm and get on with our day. Inadequate sleep is also closely linked to mood disorders with one impacting the other so adding alcohol to the mix is a recipe for disaster.
  • Better physical health – regularly drinking more than is recommended can increase the chances of you suffering from serious long term health conditions like liver disease, stomach ulcers and cancer.
  • More energy – drinking less can make you feel less sluggish, less irritable and more motivated and more likely to reap the rewards of exercise. Moving more will release our feel-good hormone friends, endorphins, and make us feel more mentally alert.
  • Feel better – not only will your skin be brighter so you’ll look better, but you’ll also feel better for drinking less. Rid yourself of headaches and fatigue and find more enjoyment in things, bringing a smile to your face. You’re also less likely to crave salty foods and eating a good diet has a crucial influence on the way we feel.

Still need more reasons to cut down your alcohol? Drinking less can help with weight loss, improved oral health, liver function and improved blood sugars and memory function. What are you waiting for?
